I have a ten gallon tank that I used to breed a few freshwater fish in. Now that that's over with, I was thinking of turning it over to salt. I know a ten gallon tank will need more care and attention that lets say, a 55 gallon because of evaporation and the salinity levels. But I dont want to be one of those crazy fish nerds who have like 50 tanks spread out in their house. I was thinking of getting a pair of clowns, and some invertebrates. Would clowns make good cycling fish? Im planning to do this very slowly so I get everything right. Any opinions about the types of fish/invertebrates I should get and if a ten gallon tank is even realistic for a saltwater tank?

A pair of clowns is already overstocked for a 10 gallon.

Damsels make good cycling fish, if that sort of thing is up your alley.

For stocking, I would do any of the smaller gobies and a sexy shrimp, and maybe a couple of nasuarus snails.

Alright. Haha the sexy shrimps are cool :P Could I use it for a grow out tank for the clowns? I have a 40 gallon that's just sitting around

If you have a 40 gallon that is just sitting around, I would really reccomend you just use it. It would be a lot more first timer friendly since water parameters can go south real fast in a 10gallon. I dont think the cost of equipment would be that much more either, expecially if you already have a used HOB filter (or other type) sitting around for the 40 as well.

But to answer your question, I dont think it would be advisable to use the 10gallon even as a grow out. Most of the clowns you would find at an LFS are already 1.5 to 2 inches in length, although I have seen some maroons that were smaller.

The smallest I would recommend putting two clowns in is a 20, and thats picking the clowns that wont grow much past 3 inches.

Alright. I think ill do some more research and find out exactly what I need for the 40 gallon.

Thank you for your help

Now you know how I felt about you rear ending me....

Seriously though, Heathd is right. If you have the 40 gallon laying around that is a great start! Much easier, less headache, and gives you more freedom.

Heathd rear ended you?

Search around a little...you can read lots in the past month that are about 10g's and stocking.
