Ok setting up my first SW tank. Its going to be a 56g cube. Going to start out with just fish, then upgrade to 120 and do a small reef. Need some advice and possible ideas for Reef safe fish, but also some good fish in general. Thinking of starting out with some damsels and clowns. My girlfriend loves the Flame angel, but that wont work in a reef setup so i will probably be keeping some fish in the 56g. Lend me your advice, and please stay on topic.

Welcome to the dark side of the hobby. There are lots of members on this forum which lots of knowledge so I am sure you will recieve all the information you need. As for reef safe fish, it all depends on what you are interested in. Do you want more smaller fish? Or less larger fish? I love clown fish, not sure why I just make sure I have a couple in every tank I run. And if you want a variety you can get Black clowns as well to give it some more colour. Tangs are cool fish to have I really like the Blue Hippo Tangs and Yellow tangs. They work really well with live rock, they like to pick at the algea and are reef safe. Angels and Butterflys are nice fish aswell, lots of colour. But Angels tend to get expensive around $200 atleast at my LFS. What I would recomend is going into your LFS and asking for some assitance from the fish floor manager. Tell him your plans and bring your GF along. He will show you all the different reef safe fish they offer, and this way you and your GF can pick out your favourties ones! Hope this helped.

i don't think i would put damsels with clowns.
damsels tend to be little A-holes and the clowns would get picked on.
also try not to go crazy and impulse shop s/w fish, its an expensive mistake
that to many others have made (2 baby clown triggers = over $100 and didn't last a week).

Here is a good link to help you get going. http://www.masns.ca/forum/showthread.php?tid=923 . If I were you I would stay away from damsels since they can get pretty agressive some times. Never keep more than one of the same species of damsle together in a tank because they will pair up and become the bash bros of the tank. This info comes from my personal experiences and not just something I have read.

The Flame angle is a great fish. we have one in a fish only setup but if fed well and there are alot of corals they usually wont effect any corals in a reef system.

Here is a photo of ours.

MAaaaaaaaaaaaaaan u want an ILLLLLLLLL looking fish for a saltwater 56G? How bout a sweeeet looking pineapple fish? ANd yea if i were you i would stay FAR away from DAMsels/ Wrasse, and Dottybacks... ALL ARE AGGRESSIVE S.O.B's for the stereotypical fish...
Scribbled Rabitfish is nice lookin... but prolly too big gfor the 56G, the 120 G would be perfect!
Some nice blennies or gobies will make interesting displays... and dont forget thje looks of the MARINE BETTA its mad niiiice looking! tell me what you think and lets see some pics when u get this $hit goin!~
