Im thinking about going mariene on a 48x20x24 tank i have access to all the gear at trade price, i wont be keeping corals or anything i will use ocean rock for malawi tanks to build it up, i wont mess about with fancy lighting but ill use 2 tubes, i can get a skimmer and salt cheapish. The tank is already running i should also have about £150+ to spend on gear. Im hoping to house a lion fish, a tang and a few other bits what do you think? So is this list of what i need right?
1x Hydrometer
1x Skimmer (my boss will sort that)
1x Salt bag
!x Rock and substrate
What else?

wow boggy nice to see you here! lol damn don't you have ....dare i say it....enough tanks! i'm only jealous! lol wish my parents were more like yours! :D

If your just wanting to run a basic FOWLR system you are on the right track just add a small piece of LR to seed your ocean rock. Remember to get a good Test kit so you can test your parameters regularly.

sounds like you know what your doing lol! can't wait to see it! :D

will live rock be ok without marine lighting?

Don't go cheap on the skimmer, make sure you buy a good brand.

Do you have a sump on this tank? Maybe you could partition a small area of it off for a refugium...

I agree dont skimp on the skimmer you get especially if your doing a FOWLR tank with large aggressive fish. You really dont need a fuge unless running a reef really so just a standard sump with plenty of bio will be fine.

agree on the refractometer, great piece of equipment. and definitely get some powerheads/wavemakers.
i love refugiums, and they can be as simple as placing a clump of chaeto in a sump compartment, with a cheap light over. you can get away with less or less frequent waterchanges, darn those nitrates.
princess: the rock would still be able to denitrify the water, but you probably would get nuisance algae that would smother it over time.
