I am working hard towards breeding the stingrays I have, and I know they are very finicky creatures when it comes to water. I have a 75 gallon tank I want to use for the puppies. Would have an aquaclear 110 HOB filter and an eheim 2215 canister filter for filtration on it. My question is, when I finally get puppies, can I just set up the tank same day by taking water from my main tank and putting it to the 75 and start running the filters or can that cause the tank to start to cycle as the bio bacteria wouldn't be established in the filter media? As in would running the water with the bio bacteria in it be enough to populate the filter quickly enough or would it cause a cycle?
Considering you can't really predict when the fish will give birth, setting up the tank early seems like a waste, so I was thinking of one way to get around it would be to run the filters on the sump of my main tank beforehand to establish the same bacteria, but is this necessary if I'm using the same water anyway? Oh and should I use 100% of the 75 as old tank water or should I split 50/50, 75/25 old, or 75/25 new?
Side question: What can I do to prevent new stingray pups from getting heater burn, as now my heater is in the sump, but I don't have a sump for the 75?
