i just got a 120 gallon tank an have ? as t exactly what do i need to set it up an run it. also im open to suggestions as far as what to stock it with

You will need filtration, heater and lighting. Thats the basics besides gravel, decor and fish.
Do you want a community tank with a lot of variety or just a single tank buster?
This can determine a lot in regard to your filtration.
I have a 120g 60x18x26 that I will move my Midas and Marble Sailfin pleco into. I will add a school of 5 Silver dollars and the will be all It will have.

In my opinion, the items below are the best just to get started. You can make adjustments or upgrade later so you don't spend too much up front & end up wasting money. All of these items are available online or in any Petsmart/Petco/LFS in the USA.
Water conditioner- Seachem PRIME (red bottle). The best & everyone agrees. Forget the Tetra brand garbage.
Heater- Hydor Theo or Fluval E-series (cheap heaters fry fish, but the Hydor is not too expensive, ~$50)
Filtration options- 2) AquaClear 70 hang-on-back (~$100, good), 2) AquaClear 110 hang-on-back (~$150, better), 1) Rena XP4 Canister Filter (~$190, even better), 1) Rena XP4 & 1) AquaClear 110 HOB (~$250, best)
Lighting- Basic T8 strip lights from the fish store for fish only. If you plan to grow plants, you will need a much bigger/better light. This will get expensive quick & the sky is the limit. i have one of the coral life lights for my 40 gallon i got . an i want a community tank wirh a lot of color possible some african cichilidsan jack dempseys or something like that .my 40 has african cichlids an a small yellow an black catfish cant think of the name off top of my head but the africans i have are young they dont have very much color to them .some light blue an little yellow to the outer tips of the fins .i thought about getting a eheim 2217 an use it for filtration would i need any more or what
