The rule of thumb is your sump should be 20-25% of your tank volume,
and also your sump should be large enough to handle the water level drop from the lowest point of the main tank overflow in case of power failure
1. Determine how far the water level will drop, in inches before the siphon breaks
2. Multiply the length and width of the main tank as well as the height of the water level drop in inches, and divide that number by 231
an example using your tank with 2" of water level drop(72" x 36" x 2" of water level drop) / 231 = 22.4 gallons the sump will need to hold before siphon breaks in case of pump, power failure, etc.
