Friday, I'm going to get a baby corn snake. I have a 20 gallon long, and I assume this will suffice for a while.

What kind of substrate do I use?
How many hours a day do I keep on the heat lamp?
And, how fast do corn snakes grow?

Thanks again. I want to make sure my corn snake is happy, this is my first snake ever.

Don't use a heat lamp. Get the heating pad that sticks underneath the tank. It's more even heat.

Aspen shavings is what I always used with my daughter's two corn snakes.

They grow pretty much as frequent as they are fed. Baby corns eat every 3-4 days, yearlings about every 7-10 days, and adults 10-14 days.

20 gallon should last its whole life, and aspen is the best substrate for corns. They dont have liquid poo and they love to burrow.

I hear that heating pads can over heat them...are you sure a heat lamp won't work?

ive used dryed up peat for my corns with no problems,im sure someone will tell me the problem soon lol.hide cave.i threw down some of that sphanctum moss and he loves to hide in it and you can still see him, branches to climb on.i do use a basking lamp on one side of the cage so he can choose wich he does.water bowl that i keep only half full and a branch that goes kindof to the middle of it so he can get in and out easy.these are very tough snakes.they eat like crazy.heat tape pads are good just only under one side of the tank though.i know some ppl dont like peat and such but i like the natural look and he is very healthy.there are other great substrates.make certain your lid seals all the way,i meen every corner,it will find a way out.good luck.this is just what works for me,i use carefresh for my boa,i think you would loose a baby corn in that stuff lol, needle in a hay stack.mine loves to be held.or you know, realy tolorates it.:)
