its a 29 gallon with a marineland emperor 400 with no biowheels, dead live sand that i need to seed, and a red sea prizm skimmer and a heater.

Is this sufficient?

What kind of medicine/qt products should i stock up on?

yeah that's fine

copper safe is a big one
panacure
methylene blue (this work in SW?)
prazi if you can get some

ok good, found all that in the garage, that POS prizm took me two hours to get up and operational.

i forgot i also have a internal uv on it, should i take it our or is it fine?

i would advise against sand in a qt tank. the importance of a QT tank, is for it to be a controlled enviroment, so the new fish has the most stress free system they can get. Stress free means prestine water. If you have sand, this can just increase the likely hood of high nitrate, which can and will have a negative impact on an already stressed fish if high enough. You can use some live rock but again not needed, as you would need to remove it to treat your tank. LR will just absorb most of the chemical that has been added, making it basically worthless.

QT tanks should also have smaller more frequent water changes performed to provide consisten water, with out any BIG changes in the chemistry. Keeping everything as steady as possible will help ensure that you may never need to dose the tank with any chemicals.

PVC tubes placed in random stacks, glued to each other of course, so they dont float away is what gives the fish hiding places. I wouldnt make anything to intricate because when you go to catch the fish you dont want them to hide in anything that would be to difficult for you to get them out of. The catching process should be done without the use of a net, to greatly reduce the amount of stress. If you induce to much stress, you have basically defeated the purpose of the acclimation and would besically need to start over. As this rarely happens, never say never.

QT is also a very good time to practice good feedings. when i say this i mean multiple types of food. This will help ensure good nutrition and will greatly cut down on disease and stress.

aww, ill take the sand out, just thought it would make it more like their natural habitat but i see your point. IS the uv a good thing to have in qt or not?

+1 on everything sweetang said.

sand holds on to chemicals so it can release it into the tank at any time. so if you used medecine containing copper at any time, inverts will not be able to be QT'd in there.

its easier to work out volume without anything in the tank too, so you can be more accurate with your medication doses. if need be some pvc pipe (as above) can be used. i actually use coffe mugs in my QT. clean of course. i dont have to worry about them floating. :)

as for the uv... not sure. it may break down the meds, even rendering them ineffective over time. but thats only an idea. the packaging the meds come in should provide some info. as it normally says remove carbon ect. so it may mention uv sterilizers too.

k thx

yeah UV is more of a prevenative device. If you want to use one thats fine, but as your medicating you will want to turn it off. Its deffinantly something you could live without.

ok thx for all the help
