The school where I teach has asked me to set up a tank for the kids.:woot: the science teacher and I are setting up a small science room for the kids. So, bearing mind the kids are Grade1 to Grade4 i wanna set up a fun and interesting tank on a budget.

I was thinking of doing a live bearer tank with a few easy plants. maybe something with angels and gouramis.
the tank is 90cmx45cmx50cm so roughly 55gal. It will not have the most expensive filter but it will have adequate as i detest underfiltered tanks. there will be moderate lighting.

Anyone out there have another idea i could do? PICTURES WOULD BE AWESOME.:clap

Thanks. yeah i was thining platys and guppys, swrodtails and mollies all for colour and a bit of green to enhance it. I'm thinking of putting an angel or 3 inthere as the kids love them, its one of the few they know.

Howdy,

How about something local? Have the kids catch some small fish and crustaceans on a field trip. It will raise environmental awareness, too.

:iagree:

Get some Crayfish too they are awesome to watch!!!!!!

in taiwan there are almost NO freshwater fish left. the rivers are too polluted. if u want river fish u have to take a 2 hour bus journey and then a six hour hike through mountains. so im kinda stuck on that one, but that is a good idea.

I would also vote that you do one cool little oddball fish maybe a black ghost Knife? It would help you to teach the children how diverse and precious life on this planet is.:)

liverbearers of any sorts and some small tetras. angelfish and oddballs might require too much care since the tank will be in a school.

i agree wiht putting a black ghost knife..i raised one form 1" with out doing anything extra...just feed the whole tank

i don't know that i would do the livebearers in an under-filtered tank. from experience with them (and maybe it's just me) i find that they poop SO much due to the fact that they "graze" constantly and are constantly eating, therefore constantly pooping. i just find that they are more messy. i would def go with some larger tetras or even the angel fish as mentioned. i think it would look cooler to the kids for them to see a big flash of a certain color to swim across the tank (tetras) rather than just some larger sized fish swimming around. more or less, they'll look like this ==|>
