I've been browsing this community for a few days and finally joined today after I picked up my first 20 gal tank for a salt water setup.

I am very new to this hobby and have a few questions before I go out and buy things I don't need/work well.

Here's what I have so far.

1. TruVu 20 gal tank
2. stand
3. pump
4. light (flourescent)

I've been shopping around for a filtration system but not sure what'd be best for my 20 set up. There are so many different kinds so I am not sure which filtration set up would be best for SW.

I am not too sure which kinds of fish I am going to get but I have a few in mind... triggers, lions, and maybe eels.

I pretty much wanna get the tank started and decide what fish i want later.

Thanks a lot for your help!

Like I said, I haven't decided on what fish I am going to get as of yet. At this point, I just want to get the set up going and decide on the fish later. of course I will be going with fishes that would be compatible with my tank.

i would start with fresh first.
thier are alot more options you can do with a fresh water tank that size.
plus since you are new to the hobby you need to develop some dicplines like water changes and other factors of regular tank maintenance.
besides you will lose alot of salt (and money) on a 20 gallon becuase of all the WCs you will have to do.

welcome to MFK:D

:iagree:

my first salt was a 20 and believe me if it's your first tank ever, it can drive you away from fishkeeping forever (and nobody really wants that).
if it's not too late to take back the 20 and stand and stuff (i assume you got it as a kit) i would and get like a 55 or something.

Thanks for all the inputs, i'll give you guys an update when my tank is up and running. Mom didn't raise no quitter!

For your filtration use a skimmer, live rock, and water changes. Good luck and don't rush anything.

I've got the tank up and running for a few days now, 6 days to be exact. I've tested for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and salinity. Ammonia levels have not spiked at all. I added a shrimp 3-4 days ago to help the process. The shrimp has puffed up with a white cloud around it.

There are a total of 25lbs of live rock and about 15 lbs of crushed coral in the tank as we speak. I might add another 5lbs of LR because my tank hasn't filled up the way I like. At first, I only added 15lbs but quickly added another 10lbs and I'm still not satisfied.

Here are some readings, it hasn't changed much since Day 1.

Temp 78-80
Salinity 1.024
Ammonia- 0
Nitrite- 0
Nitrate- 0

Here's a pic with 15lbs of live rock. I will add a current pic later.

I see you kept the 20. Good luck with that. :)

It sounds like you have a store near you that sells SW stuff. I would just try to get another small piece or 2 of LR and go a little higher with your pile.
