sev ID - rotkeil?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Looks like a Heros Efasciatus Severum to me. The rotkeil at juvenile size have faint redish color around the gill and head area. Some do color better then others. Meaning late bloomers! These guys can be rather tricky to id at times. Did you get them both from the same place?

Ohhh ok thanks! And yes they came from the same place... they are quite small still. Barely 2”

They do have some reddish/brown dots around the gills... maybe I need better pics lol. Hard to get when they are constantly moving.

The top photo, fish has some good coloring. I would wait and see what happens. If those pigmentations color up i just might be. Where did you get them from if you don't mind me asking?

I wasn’t sure if the # of bars helped with the ID or not.

They were sold as red shoulder I just wondered if they were specifically Rotkeil. Can’t wait til they start to colour up a bit. I got them in Mississauga, Ontario.

Then you good! It is a type of Rotkeil. I thought different when i look at the first photo you took. Definitely color going on there. The second photo would be the tricky one because it's rather dim.

I see the dots, and I have some little Rotkeils that look nearly identical to your fish. If they were sold to you as Rotkeils they probably are. These guys can take a while to grow up.
