Severum attacked

I was really astonished to see my severum nipped badly by some notorious tiger barbs in my tank, its a male severum about 5". One day I see in the noon that almost all its dorsal is trimmed with slight finrot, an aweful sight. I threw out all the barbs from the tank, the severum is improving again. Its the biggest fish in my tank and ofcourse the boss, I still cant understand how did those barbs managed to attack it so badly, they even started pecking its body n scales.

Poor severum, good thing you got rid of the barbs, but that seems pretty hanus for some barbs to do. You possitive it was them? They always seemed so skittish to me. It looks like it might just be developing some sort of sore. Put aquarium salt in that water and that should help it heal up.

yea put some aquarium salt in there and it will heal...my severum got beat up and he had his complete tail taken off, it took him about 3 weeks to grow it back. and i've had tiger barbs be so aggresive that if i would have thrown a feeder fish in there he would be the first one to go at it! i used to have 3 and now i only have 1 and he's damn aggressive except for when my other fish think he is a snack, like the other 2!

Depends how many Barbs you keep.

I've heard 6+ and they'll just nip themselves in their pecking order, under 6 and they'll nip other things.

That would make sense to me. I've only ever had a couple at a time and they always nipped the fins of other fish. If I decide to keep them in the future I'll make sure to have a shoal of them.

Thanks everyone for your replies, it was really unexpected for me, there are 6 barbs, very skittish, I always liked them schooling. Some days back I left them in the morning, returning in the eve i found this. Its not even the case of being underfed, TBs are fairly fast and grab the food before anyone does and always get overfed everytime in my tank.
