I’m trying to determine if a severum I saw at a LFS is a red shoulder or not (looking for eight bands). It has two Y bands on its body (one in the middle and one near the gills). Fish is slightly larger than 4” and the Y isn’t super obvious but noticeable when under the right lighting. I’ve noticed this before on other severums. Does a Y band count as one or two bands?

Heros are often misbarred with fused or broken bars. They are not always a 100% reliable method. Unfortunately there are tons of hybrids out there so I see a lot of rotkeil and green crosses with broken or fused bars, and a lot of fish with all rotkeil traits and 9 bars instead of the 8 that wild fish have.

If it’s a single bar that forks into a Y it’s probably meant to be a single bar and you’d count it as one.

Rotkeil typically can be identified by a combination of 8 bars, having bright orange-red pelvic and anal fins even at an early age, and the bottom of their bars forming black splotches on the lower flanks (this may not appear until they’re older).
