Group,

I Have a pair of mated gold severum. The pair formed and spawned with fry in a large 165 Gal community tank. The fry were eaten by my clown loaches.

I moved the severum to a 55Gal by themselves. Now the pair will lay eggs, but the eggs fungus over after 4 - 5 days. A few spawns ago, I thought I saw a wiggler ( many of the other eggs were white ).

The male and female severum are not eating the eggs. I believe the male is fertile, and does fertilize the eggs. My water perameters are not perfect, but close right out of the tap.

My tank temp is 80 degrees F
PH 6.5 or 7
Very good tap water with hard GH 180 Range
50KH

I am trying to keep the tank as clean as possible. I am considering removing all the gravel, etc. Why are the eggs turning white ? What are your suggestions ? Water softener pillow for the filter ?

Thanks,
Jason

if the eggs turn white that mean there are not fertile..

is there any current in the tank?, too much current can wash away the male's millet before it reaches the eggs

Hmmmm,... I thought the eggs turned white because of fungus, after taking too long to hatch ?

nope; healthy, fertilized eggs wont develop fungus

I'm pretty sure it's not a water current issue. My filter is a Hot Magnum Pro canister with a dual biowheel. I guess I'll buy a clay flower pot to see if that helps to block current.

There must be a reason why the male is not fertilizing the eggs in the 55Gal?

I understand the purpose of dither fish to lessen aggression; However, is there a purpose for dither fish in breeding ? Somehow the community tank environment enduced the male to properly fertilize the eggs.

Thanks for your suggestions,...

Sounds counter productive but I would put something else in the tank with them. I have had many fish pairs that will be reluctant to breed or not breed well if there are no other fish in the tank. The issue is that other fish will eat the fry it you arent careful in your choices. A divider with a school of larger tetras on the other side has been the answer for this several times for me...

I have a pair of pink convicts with a ton of mixed sized fry and juveniles from different spawnings. I think I'm going to try putting a couple of smaller .5 - 1" pink convicts in with my Severum pair. Convicts are so hardy. They will get chased all over the place, and still do well if they can retreat to a hiding spot.

Thanks for the suggestion,... That could get the my male Gold Severum more interested in fertilizing the eggs.
