The piercing red eyes, gentle giant and wet pet are three descriptions of the severum that compelled me to purchase.

My 6-7" green sev is definitely a gentle giant(kind of he has killed another gold severum bigger than him when he was a few inches, shredded a nice sized angelfish's fins, and every once in awhile doesn't want to see the bn pleco so he chases it under driftwood) with his kindness towards the fancy guppy school that was initially meant to be a predatory treat. He definitely is a wet pet, doing his little feed me dances, following me around the room in his tank, hanging out near my hand and inspecting while I do maintenance, eating from my hand, almost let's me pet him, he even splashes me when I feed the geckos in their viv next to his tank because he wants the attention. Unfortunately his eyes aren't red. They are an orangish amber color. I've read and heard that their eyes turn red as they mature and contradictory discussions stating that if they are going to have red eyes they would have them already and get more pronounced as they mature.

From you peoples' experiences what is the case?

If his eyes never turn red it's ok because I love the punk even though that and I'll never be able to have nice plants.

A lot of H. efasiactus keep their orange or amber eyes. H. notatus and the mouthbrooding types usually have red eyes.

Your sev experience sounds alot like mine - I bought a red sev a year ago at 3in and he is now pushing 8in. Immediately killed another sev and shredded a huge angel I had. Anything smaller than him is left alone. Despite this, he inspired me to keep other large fish and I'm now growing out a group of different viejas along with some trimacs and lyonsi in another tank. Keeping one big fish has turned out to be a gateway drug for me haha.

Hopefully you were able to rehabilitate and nurse your angel back to health. I'm glad I caught it in time. Now that angel is huge and has gorgeous flowing fins and is easily 8" top fin to bottom fin and has his own 55 at my lady's house with potential mates growing out in random tanks about the house.

I know what you mean about the gateway drug. My big male convict was my first fish then the severum was my first big cichlid and now I am eyeballing everything large growing in ca/sa for a future big tank.
