They are generally non-pathological and nothing to worry about. I don't know exactly what they are but I've had and have fish with them and they never developed into anything. I have heard they are small encysted parasites that require an intermediate host to develope (like the fish being eaten by a brid) otherwise they just die or lay dormant. Another possibility is they are a manifestation of an autoimmune condition or a virus like a wort or herpes simplex. Either way they don't do anything other than look a little unsightly.

Got 1 heckelii and all the red sevs i got from wetspot has them. Heckelii has had 1 on his tail fin since he was a juvie and that was a year ago. He's always one of the best looking in the tank outside of that blemish. I call it the crawford beauty mark.

I've noticed that my fish get them sometimes where fin damage has grown back. I've often wondered if it was sort of like scar tissue. It doesn't seem to affect them in any adverse way and some of my fish have had it for 6+ years.

In all honesty you could probably trim off the fin and it'd grow back properly without it, but that's a lot of work because then you have to keep the water really clean so that it grows back properly. In my case, I just leave it. It's a cosmetic thing and it does irk me sometimes but I guess as long as the fish are healthy and spawning that's all that matters.

There is no problem with fish but I don't like the look of them
