I have 2 Severums. A green and a gold. I've had the Gold a little over a year and he is only about 3.5-4" if that. The Green is probably 2.5-3" and I've had him about 6 months. Are these fish relatively slow growers? I bought 2 greens for my mom from my LFS about 3 months ago and they are already as big or bigger than the ones I've had a year. All fish get the same food and get the same amount of water changes ( weekly 25%) why do hers grow faster than mine? Hers are
In a standard 55 and mine are in a 72 Bow Front.

Check and see if the stats are the same in both tanks, i think the 55gal gives them more range horizontal wise and believe it or not that could be the difference.

My guess would be food related.
You say they are both getting the same type of food.
But how often are they feed? And how much?

I have a gold severum that is less than 1 yr and easily 6-7". He gets fed twice daily. They grow slower than some cichilds such as oscars but certainly not slow.

Most of my severums were 8 - 10" by 2 years old. Usually by the end of the first year they're 5 - 6" at least, sometimes larger depending on gender and genetics.

Are you sure they weren't already runted when you got them from the LFS? Sometimes you buy 2" fish thinking that they're young but in actuality they've been cramped in an LFS tank with little food or water changes for months, which can slow or stop their growth/development. I've had plenty of fish over the years that never reached their full potential because they missed out on vital growth and development when they were young. This is often do to lax care.

Something is def not right there - have you tried worming them? I got a red sev in april at around 3in and its now pushing 7. I feed heavily and do alot of WCs. Sevs are thick, stocky looking fish. If yours look skinny, they're either not getting enough food or they have something internal.

They both get Cichlid delight cubes 2 times a week and Tetra Cichlid sticks once a day. Maybe stunted? But, the gold was the size of a nickel when I got him a little over a year ago and he's about 3.5-4" so it's not
Like he hasn't grown. And the small one is probably stunted I've had
Him 6 months at least and he's grown maybe .5". As far as a 55 being more vertical? I'm pretty sure the 72 is taller so that shouldn't be an issue.

My sev goes crazy over freeze dried black worms & freeze dried tubifex. Personally I would drop the cichlid cubes & very your pellets/sticks some. I try to stay away from frozen foods(other than occasional bloodworms & brine shrimp) as they can foul the water very quickly if uneaten.
