Severum Help

I have a few questions regarding my Severums.




1. What kind of severum are these? I have heard a few different names and not sure which is accurate or does it matter?

2. Their fins are tattered a bit, is it from nipping at each other or disease of some sort. Not noticing anything on any of my other fish.

3. They nip and each other and lip lock, is this a big issue? Can I stop them from doing so. They are lovely fish so I would like to keep them as nice as possible.

I have three of these guys and thinking of getting more so just want some help. Thanks in advance.

red severums. fin damage is most likely from nipping. you can add some melafix to help with that.. how long have you had them? what size tank? if they are new to the tank they are probably just establishing dominance / pecking order. Mine have done it a couple times but it never got serious. just keep an eye on them. they are not an very aggressive fish so everything should work out in time.

1. common name is red spotted gold severum. Males tends to have worm markings on their face.

2. Yeah, they've probably been battling

3. My green pair started off this way: lip locking, chasing, tail slapping. If its a dominance thing, they should stop once dominance has been established, or this could be a mating ritual. Severum aggression aren't known to cause much harm to each other, so let them sort it out and then peace should be restored.

I've had them for months. I took out my driftwood to make room for my growing stingrays, perhaps that has something to do with it. It doesn't seem to effect them otherwise, but obviously they look better with their fins in tact.

Also, they are in a 300 gallon tank.
