hi guys, just need a second opinion on an issue i have with my severum. He was given to my by a friend 5 months ago so i put him in my 40G. He stayed in there by himself for about 3 months till i started getting bored so i decided t try to add some other tank mates. i tried an oscar, and he killed it, then i tried another oscar but a little bit bigger and he still killed it. Then i though if i put something a little more aggressive in with him t would work so i tried a green terror. He killed that too:cry: but he wouldn't eat them, he would only kill them. so then after looking online and talking with one of my LFS's i got 1 salvini, 1 fire mouth and one JD. they are all around 2" and the severum is about 6". This time i tried buying some more rocks and driftwood to make some caves and change the territories up. Within the first day he already killed the fire mouth and has done some damage to the salvini and i noticed a little bit of damage to the JD but he seems to be fine. Now my question is, should i remove the severum, or should i wait for the bigger tank to come and see how they react? My buddy told me he is a Turquoise Severum bought at pet mart. They eat cichlid Red, tropical flakes and blood worms. I haven't fed him any live food but my buddy tells me he use to feed him feeders and worms. My LFS has offered to take him and give me a store credit.

Any suggestions?

i thought severums were on the peaceful end of the cichlid spectrum.

Me too, turns out i was wrong

you can try taking out both fish, re arrange the tank decor then drop them both in at the same time.

you need to get a bigger tank, with that small of a tank and the severum established alone for so long he thinks he owns the tank, i would recommend getting at least a 75 to house the three fish

i agree a bigger tank is coming, but for the time being, should the severum be removed and i just start fresh with all juvi's? or risk both the JD and salving getting killed?

Need a bigger tank, for one. I have a large sev myself, that I am trying to make a decision on what to do with. He's one of my favorite fish... so I'd hate to get rid of him. But its somewhat going in that direction. Mine is in a 55 gallon that really is becoming more of a Uraguay setup. He tends to chase my red ceibals around from time to time, but he never catches them, nor has he been reletness with it. But I will soon be adding some gymno balzanii, and would like to remove the heater completely, and so he really doesn't fit this scheme.

The problem is, I'm afraid to move him to my 125 where my albino oscar and my male lyonsi are. I fear they will beat him to death.

So... not real sure what I'm going to do myself. But for you, I'd suggest trying a larger tank first, and try getting fish as close to his size as you can.

For me, I think I'm going to move my guy to the 125, but not until maybe I can add maybe two more fish along with him, so no one focuses on going after him only. Then, hopefully things settle down.

We'll see. Anyway, sorry for the somewhat hijack, and good luck with whatever way you decide!

Thanks for the advice Rich i feel the same about giving mine away , i will try and get that bigger tank as soon as possible. Im just going to watch him closely for now, he just started to colour up so nice and id hate to get rid of him, but i may have too. The JD has come out of hiding and is swimming around the severum more. The salvini seems to still be staying around rocks and in hiding spots.

I haven't had any problems with my severum though he is smaller then the other fish. Mines in with a jack Dempsey a black belt and a fire mouth and is usually getting pushed around and he's about a quarter inch shorter the the bb and the jd and around a half inch shorter then the fire mouth

Why not just leave it a severum species tank and put nothing. Big males can be aggressive, especially in your experience!
