I have a 5 inch Red Severum that I've had in a 100 g tank for about 5 months now. I want to buy a 2-3 inch green Severum and add it to the same tank.

Would they be compatible or would they just fight a lot?

it just depends. i have a pair of severums in my 125g and im holding a small 3-4" female severum for a friend. at first they chased her but then things settled down.

Depends on the sex of the fish and the footprint of your tank as well. I have a breeding pair of green, a gold and a rotkeil (all adults) in a 6' 125g. The gold is the most aggressive but it's only a little chasing here and there no damage. I break up the line of sight and give them lots of places to get away from one another. I just posted pics of my greens in the SA/CA media lounge if you want and idea of what I'm talking about.

Every fish is different and some people just get a crazy fish...

This may sound silly, but I've had amazing luck by just adding males. They sometimes get pushy and I've seen them lip-lock in displays of dominance, but without females to fight over, they mostly are very passive. I would imagine that adding a female would send that entire tank into a frenzy.

If you do add another severum, it's best to do the old "pull the current severum out, move some decorations around, put them both back at the same time" routine.
