My gold severum just seems really sick out of the blue, when no real obvious external signs are visible. Behind his left pectoral fin it seems a bit swollen.

Yesterday he seemed fine, ate like a pig and constantly begging for food like he usually does. This morning he seemed a bit more hesitant to show himself as usual, but he usually chills under his piece of driftwood in the mornings.

Tonight after dinner however he didnt eat, and now he just sits at the bottom. I could even pick him up with my net so I could look for any signs.

Except for the swelling behind his fin and him being more pale than usual there seems nothing wrong with him.

I have no idea how to treat him as I have no clue what it is and it came up so fast.

Any balance problems while swimming?Maybe some bloat or overfeeding. I’d try some epsom salt 1 tbsp per 5g. Hold feeding for a day or 2. Watch and keep the water clean.

Sadly he didnt make it through the night..

I hope fish heaven has a place for him where he can annihilate every piece of pothos that he likes, as he loved to do that when he was alive.

Doesnt seem like bloat or a swimming bladder issue, seemed like he just didnt have the energy to swim. When I put him out of my net yesterday he swam slowly but steadily to the bottom.

The only thing ive done different is that ive fed hexshield mixed in garlic guard a couple of days ago.

I also saw some interesting interactions between my sick severum and my Oscar, every now and then my O would check on him, lay beside him and wiggle. As to try and make him swim again, theres definitely more to fish than most people think.

Sorry for your loss. Anytime a fish dies that quickly, it's typically due to an internal bacterial infection, the reddening behind the fin is a clue. I doubt the hexshield had anything to do with it. I wouldn't worry about the other fish yet.

Yeah I guess, what kind of internal bacterial infection could do this and is there any way to prevent it from happening again?

It could be any pathogenic bacteria that commonly lives an aquarium like columnaris. There's not much you can do to prevent this from happening than doing weekly or more water changes.
