I have a 75 gallon Severum tank and recently added a nice peace of driftwood and its turning my water brown. I know it might make the fish feel more comfortable, softens, and lowers my PH. But I can't decide whether or not to keep it and let the water turn brown. If anyone has a "brown water tank" send pics or suggestions of whether to keep the water brown or not.

Just boil the wood to get rid of tannins. Had this in my sev tank.

Doesn't hurt anything. Just looks ugly.

I personally like the "brown water" look. It looks closer to nature. As for it taking away from the color of your fish, that depends on your lighting. I realize it's not for everyone, so if you don't like it after it's been in there you could always as mentioned boil it and remove it all together while still having the wood.

Or just leave the wood in there and eventually after enough water changes the tannins will start to diminish and your water will gradually start to clear... May take several months though.

Yeah, just do water changes and it will deminish over time. I actually love the brown color but if you're doing water changes regularly it won't stay that way.

it won't get terribly dark if you're doing regular water changes. it takes a good 2 or 3 weeks for my tanks with driftwood to get dark enough that i feel uncomfortable looking at them (even the ones with LOTS of driftwood). so i just do my regular weekly water changes.

agree... no worries man. if you like the driftwood look, ya gotta let the wood do it's thing and leak junk. it'll clear up if you want it to.
