Hey everyone, I'm trying to figure out what to do as far as stocking for my 75g. I have one Severum that's about 4"? He seems to be in the phase where he's starting to add girth. What do you think would be an "ideal" tankmate(s) to give me the best chance at successfully keeping them? I'm wanting to get one or more SA cichlids. Any and all help appreciated!

Eb acaras are nice
Angel fish
Other Severums
Rams

EB's are definitely one of my considerations. I already have an Angel in another setup so I wasn't planning on any more for this aquarium. Is it okay to keep different types of Severums together? I was under the impression Bolivian's wouldn't be a good match...Would it be best to get a group of them? What about Festivum's?

I have a 7" red severum in my 75 with a 5" electric blue acara, 3" rio tapajos severum, 3" festivum and 3" chocolate cichlid. They get along fairly well. Smaller acara and fesrivum chase each other from time to time. Every once in a while my large severum will chase the smaller off. That's about it though. Festivum or chocolate would work well as well as acara or some red head geos. Good luck!

That set up may have worked in the short term, but full grown it would have been way over crowded...

I wouldn't put chocolates in a 75 personally. Festivum are schooling cichlids that mesh well, a school of something like geophagus orange head tapajos would work as well. Plecos, most Acara, and most other smaller cichlids will work well.

Without more room I would suggest you keep the Severum as the biggest fish in the tank. Rams and Acara's work. I saw these angel veil rams that seemed a good match for E.B.A.'s If you had a larger tank I would suggest a Synspilum as they tend to have similar temperaments to Severums. My chocolate and Carpintis ended up getting kind of aggressive towards my severum even when they were smaller. Severums have tiny mouths so they can't really do the mouth arm wrestle thing without getting hurt. They quickly become the tank punching bag. You can also stock dithers like rainbowfish or giant danio's if you're looking for more action in your tank.

So if I was to get a group of Festivum's or Bolivian's 6 would be good? Are there any "fancy" plecos that don't get big?

Festivum still get upwards to 8 inches. Small bioload but larger footprint room is till needed. Same said for red heads geos. I have my 75 overstocked because I have plenty of filtration and do massive water changes (60 or so percent) every couple of days. But this is only while they are smaller juvies. Bristlenose plecos don't get very large. They need real driftwood though to help with their digestive system. Especially if they don't have a sufficient algae/veggie diet.
