i know this may be just my mistake, but is it possible for poly's to change sex?
i'm asking because i have to pollis i got about 6 mo ago. i got them around 5"(i think:confused:). anyways then both their caudal fins looked identical. so much so that we called them the twins, Emma and Jenna(fyi for anyone cares, all my bichirs, except my first, are and will be named from the movie Slither:D).

well i just noticed today as they were swimming around one of their caudal fins was leaf shaped and had a brown border. i thought at first it was just flared up but when i continued to watch its always like that. the other still has the same thinner fin. i can try to get pics but i don't think i have any old pics:duh:

i have read that you cannot sex poly's until bigger but thought that was most people couldn't or didn't care. i see the difference in sens no matter how big(not claiming to be an expert, just noting that in a lfs when they had new baby's i could see a distinct difference between the wide male, thin female fins.

so am i crazy?

They don't change sex, you just purchased them at just below the point where it becomes possible to sex them.

The truth is, most polypterus keepers are very interested in the sexual dimorphism of these fish, and that tends to be one of their first questions.

Sometimes the males do seem to have a discernible shape to their anal fin when very small, but most times, they have to grow out and develop the thickness.

A friend of mine bought me two albino sen juvies for xmas and they looked the same until one sprouted a massive anal fin.

thanks. i was pretty sure they weren't able to but like i said-i isn't no export:D.

well guess i gotta change their names. maybe i can start researching breeding:naughty:
