I was wondering how to determine the sex of the snapping turtle, but wasn't sure how. I was reading about hot to, but wasn't really sure what it meant. My snapping turtle is young, about1 to 2 inches(shell size).
Thanks

American common or gator snapper? Gator snappers don't reach sexual maturity til they're about 15 years old and 15" shell size. Until mature, they're difficult to sex. Common snappers are a bit easier to sex (according to the Houston Zoo). Males typically have long, thick tails with the vent opening well beyond the carapace edge.

Sorry, but what is the carapace, I read about that but wasn't sure. Mine's a common snapper.
Thanks

The carapace is the upper portion of the shell. The plastron is the lower portion (chestpiece).
