a friend of mines doesnt want his RBP any more...he has 3 about 5" now..
if i take them in, i want to start breeding them or just A PAIR. how do you sex RBP?

btw, i never kept them and any tips?

I dont think there is a known way of sexing RBP.. and breeding them will require a HUGE tank! the only guy i know who bred them did it in a Big pond! and had abt 25-35 RBP... hes a total professional though..

As for advise on how to take care of them just go through the threads here u'll find a lot of great advice.. good luck!

Piranha are not sexually dimorphic, meaning that male and female look the same. The only way to tell which is which is to wait until two pair up. The one guarding the nest will be the male. If you want to breed them, I had some that bred in a 40 gallon, although I would recommend at least a 55. RBP's are easy to breed, just read up on it, ask questions, and Good Luck!

Theres lots of information on piranha fury about breeding p's, more than you'll ever need to know.
Tons of information on how to care for the fry also.

Just google piranha fury and do some research over there, theres plenty of breeders over there to help you out

It has been done in smaller tanks, but I have heard 75+ has the best luck. Though, there are several variables.

swt. thanks guys.

i was in my lfs not so long ago. the guy said he breed RBH in a 80 but he put some kind of extract that helpd them breed easier?? any info on that? or some one can tell me more??

thanks again..

He may be talking about blackwater extract. You can also use peat to add tannins to the water. It more accurately simulates their natural water conditions and with give it a tea-like tint. I am still learning about it myself, but I am planning on adding peat to my 135 gallon before I add my piranhas. I think peat is more natural and it's cheaper, but like I said I'm not experienced with it so do some more research. Here's a thread

females are more stocky and males are leaner.thats just about all regarding sexing them.
75gal is big enough for breeding rbp.people have done it in 55gals.my two breeding pairs are in a 75gal though.

No real way, ive always found that RBP breed best by getting a small group andthey will pair up and move away from the group to spawn, ive witnessed this a few times
