Hi,

Been looking for a dempsey for awhile and rescued this one who was returned by someone who bought him/her and a Pacu (both returned).

First off: Male or Female

Second: She/he is aroudn 3.5-4 inches long. Given the colors is this one going to be drab or colorful as I am hoping.

My O had zero tolerance for this fish at first but now doesn't seem to have any issues. It's actually quite funny as the jack seems to be imitating my O (trying to swim with him/her). My O tolerates but still gives him a little scare every once in awhile.

Also, I think my SDs are getting a little big and bossed around by my O/con/dempsey. Anyone try large rainbows as dithers before. I am looking for a smaller school of something more active.

My Sds are scared witless in this 90 gal and my O doesn't attack but has no respect pushing them around like they weren't even there.

Thanks for the help.

So.... Male or Female?

im gonna go with male on this one

That looks like a male. A male Dempsey has pointed dorsal and anal fins that form an almost streamlined solid fin with their caudal fin. A female has more blunted dorsal and anal fins. He looks like he should be pretty well colored. The better the water conditions and generally how happy he is, the more colorful he will be.

Thanks all,

I was hoping for a male but the blue is focussed around the gill plate but not so much to make me think female.

I hope jack as opposed to Jackie becomes a looker.

My water is always clean I do 80% a week sometimes twice in a row.

Thanks again,

Greg

he just hasnt colored up yet. give him some time. males can get blue color on the gill plate. females however, will have thick splashes of blue color as opposed to just a few dots. here's my male. you can see he also has some blue on his gills

Gill plate suggests male.
If you want a small school of something more active
I'd just got with giant danios, they swim all day
and if you get like 7 or 8 they swim ing a school
and chase eachother lol.
Plus they can take the aggression if the tank is just that aggressive.
When your O grows up it might snag a few but you'll still have a couple danios lol.
