I took some new pictures. I know little to nothing about sexing jags, but based on their aggression, it seems like the lighter one is male and the darker one if female. However, from what I've heard, the females are usually lighter at this size and the males darker. The lighter one is starting to get aggressive and, while it looks a lot nicer at this point, I think I'm going to have to put it in its own tank or get rid of it. What do you guys think? My goal was to find a nice jag that was safe with the other fish I have. The darker one isn't the nicest one in terms of looks, but it's the nicest one in terms of personality and personality is more important than looks in this case.

well the darker one is most likely a male and the lighter one is a female...:) this is how I sexed my jaguar cichlid and I got a male

i'm just reinforceing, and also sexing jaguars is not always as easy as looking at shadeing of colors, i wrote my steps in sexing them in one of these threads, my way is always very accurate.

oh well hope our words are correct! :nilly:

quote from other thread-

"body and head marking patterns.

shadeing of colors- females ussally have light coloration- depending on origin of collection (WC niceraguan or feral caught florida jag females tend to have this and are very easy to sex) where as many LFS jaguars breed over many generations (not F0,F1,F2). are harder to tell.

females have a differnt head shape- ussally rounded, where as males are elongated.

and if you have to- fins, not always accurate but females tend to have rounded fins and males have more pointed fins."

thanks a lot. i have read a few jag sexing threads and, for some reason, I still have a hard time telling them apart. helps now that I have my own examples. wow, so the female is the aggressive one...who would have thought. I guess that's good news, then. I will keep the male (darker one) then and get rid of the female. I wish I had room to keep the female, too, but I don't.

yeah, she does look really nice, especially for a poopsmart fish. Too bad I have to get rid of her :(
