So I've had this Midas/RD for about 7-8 years and for most of that time assumed it was a she. For most of that time she had no hump and remained lightly built but over the last couple years she bulked up and developed a hump. I know females can look a lot like males and even get humps so I really don't know for sure what it is. I recently bought an adult Midas/RD that I am pretty certain is a male. They are together in a divided tank. Am I attempting to breed two males here? Their breeding tubes look different so I still believe my older fish is a female but confirmation would be nice.

Although it looks female, I'm surprised that you've had it 7-8 years and it's never laid eggs. Most females will instinctively lay eggs from time to time, regardless if there's no male present.

I know, that is partly why I'm so confused. She very well may have laid eggs and I just never saw them. She has a flower pot she guards fiercely and there could be eggs in there sometimes and I just don't see them. I have a female severum who has laid eggs only once (that I'm aware of) and I've had her just as long. This RD/Midas is always chubby looking as if she is holding eggs, perhaps she reabsorbs them as fish often do. So she does look female to you though? Glad I'm not the only one who thinks so.

Here is my other one who I'm attempting to pair up with the larger fish. I feel pretty confident this one is a male, he is half the size (and probably a lot younger) than my other fish but already has the hump started. His breeding tube is a lot thinner as well.

Gonna have to bump this, I've gotten a lot of views but only one response. Sorry for the hassle but someone who knows has gotta see it.

The first one is clearly female.

If the second one has a tube that is about 1/2 to 3/4 smaller/thinner, then it's a male.

Thanks, I appreciate it. Nice to have my thoughts confirmed and glad to know I'm not trying to breed two males! The smaller fish does have a much smaller tube.

+1 on the first being female. BUT your second fish is not a midas, red devil, or midevil. It is a hybrid... Looks similar to my bp/tex that I used to own. Check this thread out... http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?560049-The-fading-process.
Good luck with your breeding project.

Yeah, they do look similar (lovely fish BTW) but I'm a bit skeptical of your claim. Not saying your wrong but I don't really see anything indicating that this is not a Midas/RD and I don't know that this one picture could really give you that kind of information. I have seen plenty of other Midas/RD cichlids and I don't see anything special about mine to indicate it is anything else. Not trying to sound insulting, I'm a skeptical person by nature. Other opinions would be great on this. That or breaking down the reasons this fish is not what I bought it as.
