Close up on the anal fin - I think that's the easiest way to tell.

Between the bichirs colour, the flash, and the substrate, the anal fin is virtually invisible. Get a close up shot of it.

thanks for that im pretty sure its a male..... it hard ever comes out, i dont see it for weeks and weeks so was lucky to get those photos tbh! ill have a fiddle on photoshop to try and highlight the back end more! thanks guys
