I've had this gold ram for 5 months or so now, just wondering if anyone can help me with its sex? I'd like to try and get it a mate, but obviously I need to know the gender first.

I believe you have a female. Look at the egg funnel how much it is extending down… You might want to get a male ASAP… looks like she is ready to lay some eggs… I think with German blue and golden rams there sexing is similar. The males are bigger where the females are smaller and have darker bellies.

This is a pic of my male.

Thanks for the reply, I thought that may have been her breeding tube as well but was unsure, because its been like that for awhile. Of course, I just made this post on another site as well, where I got a response from someone that thought it was a male. I'm still leaning towards female, but I really want to know for sure.

The dorsal extensions are what would throw a lot of people, females usually aren't that elaborate. But between the vent and the pink flush on the belly I'd guess female too. Unfortunarely gold rams are harder to tell apart than the normal color phase because the pink flash is barely there in golds where it is very noticable in normal color phase.

Thanks for the help guys. I am convinced now it is a female, from the vent and the pink area, as the people that said it was a male have been pointing to the dorsal extensions which I know are misleading. And dhgyello04 your pic was really helpful as well, because your ram does have somewhat of a different body shape that says "male cichlid" to me.
