Sex My Umbee...........

It's hard to tell from the crappy pics, but i would say female. With a 50% accuracy.

Ya i would say female.

I too had some difficulty sexing my Umbee’s. However, I have seen several male umbee since then. And have become better at sexing them. I have been looking for a male umbee for 3months now. With no luck.
I have a picture of my Female umbee in my portfolio. The pictures are old. I hope you can compare the two and come to a concussion.
It’s harder sexing them when their that young. But to answer your question I believe your umbee is a Female. :(
The thick and bulkiness is just not there. And the dorsal fin will always give it away.
I bought mine from Jeff and you?

the pics are dark because my tank has a pitch black backround on back and sides. I had to use flash just to get anything. Also why female, its only 3" long and is bulky because it just ate 7 guppies right before i took the pic. Everything i've learned so far from websites tells me its male. It was twice the size of all its siblings and has always showed a dark line on its side where females often show just a black dot. And the others i had had little to no green in thie face or body and this one is covered in green. If you are going by the sharpness of the dorsal then you are wrong because they dont develope the pointed fins until they hit 4.5-5" or more and at that point the bulky body and not being more elongated would make a difference but at this point it doesn't. Can i get any experienced opinions here. I had a friend that has raised over 50 sets of umbee fry at his fish store and he tells me about 90% that its male due to its early spangling throughout its face and the enormous amount of green throughtout its body at only 3"... But i just wanted to hear from others,,,,,,,,,Also Ridether your female is a easy giveaway due to the darkblack on the upper dorsal. Mine has no black at all on the dorsal...

Well, if I were to take a guess, and I say it's a guess, then I would have to say female. I have been through 12 female umbees (from Jeff Rapps) and working on my last batch of six.

Your umbee is still too small to sex. I say female because all my juveniles (grew them up from 1" TL) had that same body shape. By body shape, I mean like an 'eyeball' shape where pics of juvenile males seem to be more streamlined in shape, like a torpedo, if you will.

I must admit, your umbee is developing nice spangles but I've had the runts in my batches develop more spangles than the dominants. The dominants always grew faster and never displayed black dorsal until about 6"TL. I know of someone's female umbee who never displayed her black dorsal until 12" TL.

Maybe you could ask CichlidScene or EMK about their experiences with juveniles.

well when it doesnt have a buldging belly full of guppies its rather long and slender like you said. I'm still confident its a male but i'll just have to wait it out. Thanks for the opinion and info,,,,
