Its a wee bit early, ok a lot early. If I had to guess I would say the chances are decent that its a male based on general color patterns and body shape.

My best advice when sexing umbee is to sit and watch the interactions of your particular fish with others. I have seen very small juvenile females take the characteristic female yellow in territory disputes giving clear indication of their sex.

This one makes its face go black when its issuing what I call 'move-on' notices to the other fish in its area. It also uses the skinny wood (body goes all black stealth mode) and literally harpoons others. It has a pet hate for the tank ruler snook which is twice its size.

I WOULD say male, but my female looked identical to that and got burned by it. I also notice my female going dark when coming into contact with other cichlids.

These are defiantly vent-able at this size? Dont want to stress it out without reason - its one of the moodier fish I have.

I would guess female. Looking at the second shot, I don't see enough blues in the fins and flanks. Body shape also, males appear longer. Can't be sure though it's still a little early. If your seeing alot of blacks in the pelvic and dorsal fins it's a dead giveaway, female!

Here's a pic of my male at around 6"-7" for reference.

too small to tell for sure IMO. My big male looked alot like that when it was the same size, and I was convinced it was female until it hit the 8" mark. Give us an updated shot a few months down the road.
