i got this new Herichthys carpintis around 7" the last few days it has been starting to mask up, my understanding is that they do this when breeding. the other part is that it is amazing how fast its face can change from white to normal while the body stays black. the thing that leads me to think it maybe female is that it is doing this around the big male convict.

first pic when i first got it. the rest from tonight

Agree, Male. You can see the tube in the first pic.

I love the look of a half black Carpintis. They turn this color when breed, as well as when they get angry. The Cyano in your avatar looks nice too.

my male used to change when things got territorial, pics are from when he was in the big tank with outher fish and the last is him in on his own.

thanks it must be territorial, it was one of the last fish added

and everyone eles thanks for your guess i'll go with male unless i see other wise.

yeah didnt mean to derail lol (he just looks like my vonts always did in their pics, but does them absolutely no justice)

Pengu13 i would agree in that the body shape seems to lean to more male for me but this can easily be settled for sure by catching the fish and flipping him over to vent him (Oo for female, oo for male) and by the way good job with the pics, they show his color really well (though im sure still not as nice as in person) i find that these guys are the hardest to get proper pics of that actually depict their true colors
