thanks mate, yea i'm 99% sure thats a male. im thinking the top one is possibly a female?

Looks like it. Notice how the bottom ones anal fin is pointed toward the end indicating its a male and the top ones anal fin is rounded indicating it's a female (something I picked up from bassinmike)

Defiantly have a pair there mate. Tops defiantly a female with the bottom being your male. Female appears to be ready to spawn too, her belly is quite plump. keep up on your water changes, keep temp warm around 88 degrees add some salt and drift wood to soften your water up a bit and you'll see a spawn in no time.

Bottom is M, Top is F.

Anal fin is rounded on top and pointed on the bottom, i find with my males they tend to have more blue through the pointed anal fin - anyone else seen this?

thats great news, thank you all for your advise.

could anyone help me out with the ideal conditions for breeding them?

I have recently moved them from a display tank in the house to into a 6 x 2 x 2 in the fish room where its sitting around 88. the pH is about 6.9 which i will be bringing down a bit more to around 6.5. Used to breed a few discus so water parameters aren't new to me either.

cheers

Sounds like you are on the right track. I wouldn't worry too much about PH, just keep the nitrates as low as possible.
