I am setting up an enclosure for ropefish and I have read that they like to be in groups of 3 or more. If I get 3, should I get one male and two females, or does it not matter? My other fish experience is with livebearers, where it is best to have at least a 2:1 ratio of females to males.
It looks like very few people have bred ropefish in captivity, and they breed in pairs from what I can tell, not harems like some fish. I would appreciate any thoughts from those of you more experienced in ropefish care.
My tank that I am starting with is about 50 gallons. I plan to upgrade it in two years when we move to a bigger house. Then, they will have a 75. I am considering starting with just a pair, or 3 fish, but I'm not sure the sex matters for ropefish since I most likely would not be able to breed them and they aren't aggressive or territorial. Let me know what you suggest.

Plus most often when you get them they're a bit hard to tell. I find they're easier to sex than other polys but they need to be big enough/mature enough to know the difference.

I have 4 males 1 female and 2 unknown. I've noticed 2 of the males showing intrest in the female but she has no intrest in them. In fact she has gotten aggressive with them when they push to hard. Going as far as biting one on the face and holding him for around a minute. I saw no damage but he seemed to get the point. I was and am hoping that she may come around. It'd be interesting to see if I can get any to survive. I'm guessing the predation on the eggs would be a huge challenge, then of coarse finding food for the fry.
