first i'd like to thank everyone for informing me about my chunky male. Now I know about the black blotch on the dorsal fin of females. But I bought 5 escondido at 1" and now they are 2-4.5", it looks as though none of them have that blotch. My project has failed and I have 5 male carpintis.
I'm asking for a second opinion just to verify before I sell some. I think I have all boys.
the last 3 photos are of the same fish

They all look like males...even the little Festae in the first pic. Carpintis aren't Texas cichs btw. Texas are Herichthys Cyanoguttatus.

I thought they were called "green texas"?

hmmm...maybe? I always thought of Texas' as the ones I can catch in Texas lol. Aka the the Rio Grande Perch.

*Edit* Now that I think about it, I have heard that before so sorry I think I was mistaken.

right! they are commonly mistaken. even sold as texas cichlids, but I don't know if they even have a common name. thats the only common name I know. green texas cichlid

Any how I also think they are all male however...pic 3 MAY be a girl. maybe....

All boys.

As for the naming, common names are "blue Texas cichild" and "green Texas cichlid" for the carpintis and cyano. Very confusing. The Escondido is a regional variant of H. carpintis.

modest man! glad to hear your opinion once again. 5/5 male, what are the odds! thanks for your help and the help from b-spizzle and 777. Time to slang some male carpintis.

UPDATE! the last 3 pics was of the same fish and it turned out to be a female! Just as I was packing them up for sale, I found it hanging out with my large male in a pot . It shows the black bottom and a faint grey blotch on the middle of its dorsal fin. they both chase away my festae. Goes to show you, its not always as easy as its made out to be.
Or, I have g a y fish.

Weird. My Carpinte - I've had two separate breeding pairs, so I'm not short of experience - have always been easy to sex. My females all had a very conspicuous black blotch in their dorsals all the time. All the pics you posted show males to me. In fact, the one you think is a female has what looks like the beginnings of a nuchal hump.
