Its a female..her dorsal fin is long. She has a lot of blue speckals on her body, not much on her face. if most of the specals are on the face(then its a male). For sure your jack dempsey is a female.
How do you tell the difference between male and female? I have two JD's and one is lighter color with a longer body, the other is dark with a short body with really blue face.

You got it backwards.
Males have:
-little to no coloring on their gill plate
-Have more spangling on their body
-tend to have a pointed dorsal
-tend to have a slimmer narrower body
Pics are pretty blury but, I"m going to say you have a male.
I still say male, lets see if we can get some experts in here. Female have more of a blueish blotch on their cheeks and less speckles on their bodies. Male's have more speckles on their body along with some on their cheeks like the one pictured above. BUT we will see....
i have no idea on how to sex them, but it would be cool if someone can figure out the exact way and put it one here cuz i too have a jd and this thread has me now wonering haha. i dont really care either way but it would be fun to know
I think Midas Madness had it right about how to tell the difference . . . in particular, the females tend to have solid blue gill-plates, while males are either lightly speckled or not blue at all . . . and it's the males that tend to have the longer fins
