I was curious about the gender of my tomato cichlid. Do the females of the species get color as well? My fish does not seem as bright as what I've seen online but definitely does have some color. I'll post up a pic once he's been in the tank a little longer and calms down. Also, does anyone have any recommendations on how to protect him? He's getting chased by every other african in the tank. They are all within a 1/2 inch of eachother size wise

Some of the Victorians are timid and most don't color their best without females in the tank...which you can't do if the tank is otherwise an all-male tank. Probably a terrified male. I'd remove him.

I ended up removing all Victorians from Malawi tanks...either no color or the aggressive ones like nyererei turned very dark...parts were black instead of red-green-blue. And they went right back to brilliant in a species tank.

The tank is actually an all female right now other than the tomato (I know it's strange). Do you think if I added a few more tomatoes they would be able to hold their own, or would I just be sending more fish into a traumatizing situation?

He's gotten some of his color back and is starting to swim around more openly. I'm yet to see him turn and face another cichlid but he's not being chased the same way and ate just fine this morning.
