Hi,

I recently bought 2 marble angelfish, and want to breed them but I don't think theyre a pair. How can you tell if you've got a male and female, 2 females, or 2 males? If they're both the same then I'll have to go and get them partners.

Thanks!

The only way to tell is when they are actually breeding, the female's tube is shorter and thicker if I remember correctly. That is the only way.

Pic of my breeders with tubes showing. Female on left tending eggs, male to the right. Yes, females have a broader tube than the male. Hope this helps a little.

Just now found this pic too. Better visibility here. Female left, male right.

also when they're really old(at least a year) certain males develop "humps" on their head, but the most definite way is through the tubes. also if you know you have a few from the same batch the males tend to grow faster than females.
