i know there may not be an easy way to distinguish them apart but i have finally begun moving my last surviving angel in to the 55g. I am looking at getting a few more just to see if they will pair up with the one i have. i just would like a way to determine if the big one i have is a male or female, she's a bit bigger than a 1/2 dollar body size. I know the best bet would be to buy a few more and try and let them pair up but if the bigger ones are easier the sex maybe i just get a bigger one, just let me know guys?

Angels are not easy to sex. The best way to sex them is to let them pair off on their own. This was the fish I had the most success in breeding and I always let them pair up on there own. I used to put about six in a large tank and they will do the hard work on there own. They do say If the belly starts at pectoral fins and ascends straight down on a smooth 45 angel to anal fin, you have a female.
If the belly starts at pectoral and goes much more horizontally to anal fin, then you have a male.to sum up Female angels tend to be more plump and males may have a small nuchal hump if old enough but its so hit and miss go for the pairing up it works.

Another trick that I've had some success with involves waiting for two mature angels to pair off, spawn, and if you're lucky enough to actually see the eggs being deposited on the slate, check the head shape of the female. Male scalare tend to have a less rounded look to them at the point between the dorsal fin and the top of the head. Problem is, they don't seem to develop this feature until they've reached maturity.
