Howdy,

While we've had several reports of malas having spontaneously spawned on this forum, I have not (yet) come across curus having been bred in captivity. Please correct me if I'm wrong, I'd love to hear about it.

With sexing wolves, the general rule is that females are heavier built. That's sometimes hard to determine without side-by-side comparison, or with well-fed or underfed fish. Can anyone share (with source if it's not yours) pics of confirmed males and females? I guess that would only be malas or autopsied specimens.

Also, post pics of your own Black Wolves and let's try and define "heavier built" ... maybe we can come up with a better way to sex them.

I think it's due to their price tag. It's expensive to the average keeper and to most keepers they're really aggressive and should be kept alone to their knowledge. So no one wants to try it and in turn lose a $300 fish. I will help with a few pictures I have of mine and will try to get more of it relaxing.heres what I have of it for now. None of these are after a feeding so this is the actually body shape of it. I say this because after feeding it's belly protrudes a lot. Very greedy fish. 8+ inches. Will try to get a more accurate measure as well. My favorite fish now.

Really, nobody else volunteers their curu pics to see if we can figure it out together ?

I've always thought mine was a female because it was thicker and heavier built. Thought about attempting to bred it but never pulled the trigger.

I've spawned very aggressive cichlids thru eggcrate dividers. Obviously not as high of a success rate of fertilized eggs but it eliminates the possibility of the male killing the female. Can this same method be used for wolf fish?

How big is yours? Head looks smaller in proportion to body, unless mine just isn't done maturing. Well obviously he isn't lol. Also got a decent, not accurate, measurement, he was turned a little, tail going backwards, came out to 8.5 inches so I'd say he's 9inches. I took more pics I'll try to get them up by tomorrow for more recent ones.

14-15" and almost as thick as my forearm.
Guess I'll have to grow mines up, that'll take a while lol. Then it could be a better comparison. But would there maybe be differences in certain variants too?
