I dont want to breed them, but for ours at work I need to be able to sex them to stop breeding.

Does anyone have any links to how to do this as i believe its quite hard outside breeding season and venting is hit and miss

Are they nasty fish?I am under the impression they are like North America's version of a snake head?

You can locate information of spawning practices on various websites, but what i can remember the male creates a circular nest on the lake bottom by uprooting plants and creating a "bed". The female lays eggs and the male fertilizes them while protecting the fry until they are old enough.

as far as sexing them... I was under the impression that the male Bowfin has more coloration then the female which is usualy more neutral in color (more brown than coloration).

Do you have many? If you are interested in selling/trading one i would love to find one which is around 6". PM me if you want to, or if you know where to easily locate one i would be thankful.

Oh and BTW itsbadlands, they arn't like a snakehead, other than some similarity in body type. They are a prehistoric species which dwells predominantly on lake bottoms. However they are aggressive as they are predetory fish. they are not as aggressive as snakeheads are when it comes to just killing other fish

Male bowfins start developing green pectoral, pelvic and anal fins when coming into breeding condition. Then the green eventually developes on the caudal fins as well. You can see brilliant specimens with an entirely green fins and belly.

Adult females will also have a little-to-no spot near the tail. Juvis and males will have this.

by what wahoo says i have two males. they are both 2'+

Cannot sell or trade as they are works not mine

Bowfin are easy to tell what the sex is,

Male Bowfin have a yellow or orange haylow arround the spot by the tail.

Females just have a spot no haylow.
