How do you sex carpintis 'escondido'? I've searched and all I have come up with so far is that the females have a dark blotch in the middle of their dorsal fin, is this true? Is that true for the carpintis AND the cyanoguttatus? (i have both) i have 1 red texas 1 cyanoguttatus and 2 carpintis (thanks jgentry ;) )

yes it is true for cyanos and carpintis but not all females will show it and some females will only show it when in certain moods. also im not sure if shows up in the hybrid red texas fish. best way would be to vent them. females will also have more slender bodies while males will have higher bodies and look all around more bulky/sturdy (but this is hard to see unless they are side by side especially if you are not experienced with them so best way is still to vent them)

no no, you dont have to do anything but look at them. just catch them and flip them over and look at their private parts right in front of their anal fins, they have two holes down there and if they are male they will both be small like this: oo, and if it is female then one will be larger than the other like this: oO if they have a little bit of size to them then it is very easy, but the smaller they are the harder it will be to tell for sure, its usually be pretty easy to vent them once they are about 3in

and i couldnt get a good shot of the cyanoguttatus, but i believe its a female. Im not sure on the sexing of them? how would i even tell with the red texas?:confused::confused: venting :(

Looks like they are settling in nicely. Those are to young to sex for sure. The black in the dorsal is also not realiable on Escondido's. My adult female breeder never shows a black spot and very few of there offspring do either. To be sure on there sex grow them up a but and have someone vent them. Once they are 5+" I can usually tell just by there shape alone. Males get really stocky and have big heads a adults.
