I am fairly new to clown knives and have no idea how to tell the males from the females. They are still small (5" and under) so it will be a long time before any hanky panky is going on. Still I am currious to know what I have. Here are some pictures of them.

Those are some nice knives...the first picture looks very similar to a royal. I don't know much about sexing them, but I have heard that in order to get them to breed they need to be housed in an extremely large tank/pond.

nice knives. i dont think you can sex them until you actually see them doing the deed. at least thats what i read. maybe a more experienced person knows some secret or somethin...

I have never found any information on how to sex the clown knives. And so far there have been no published reports on successful tank breeding. I found one report on an "accidental" tank breeding however the owner did have any information regarding which of his knives were male or female, water conditons, etc. Although the eggs did hatch, none of the fry survived:(

:swear: Every site I see says that CK's are impossible to tell which one is which. I was going to post this exact question but I see that there is no "trick" to telling. My question is how do you end up with a breeding pair, I don't know anyone who has enough space to just keep buying a monster like this, hoping to end up with a breeding pair. :wall: How frustrating.

I do not thinlk anyone can help you on that, Chompers....They'll know it, if it is the case, LOL

Still no way of telling males from females. Even breeding them is pretty hard from what I've read. Very rare to breed them. Need A LOT of space. More likely a pond. Floating plants, flat rocks, warm temperature, quality food, etc.

i have the right amount of ck but not the size to breed them..................
