IM going to go pick up some demseys and want to get a breeding pair but dont know how to tell male and female apart? Is it the same as other cichlids with the pointed anal and dorsal fin means male or what?

oh and also the males dorsal and anal fins are much longer and pointer than a females. difficult to sex when smaller though

females have the gems on the gill plates and theyre more concentrated on the bottom of the fish whereas the males have it on top of the head and throughout the body. i had a thread started on this on the next page.there are some good pics

Depending on the size it's easy. If they're a couple of inches, the male will have rows of spangles. On the female, the spangles won't be in rows, they'll be clustered with much less color. On cichlids that have been kept together dorsals get bitten off or torn up. Fin shape isn't the best method so don't rely on it exclusively.

On fry, the males grow faster. If you want to ensure a pair, buy 6. Get 3 bigger ones and 3 smaller ones.

Still one of my favorite questions :) I love these threads!
