sexing discus

is there anyway to tell physically? like do male have a duller center of the body and female stay brighter fully through? i have noticed this in alot of pairs i have been seeing so i was wondering about that. also, if there was a female in spawn mode and you put in a random large male would that male go into spawning mode? i had a pair that was about to spawn again and my male died. the female is still ready to spawn and i got another adult discus that i think is a male. would they have a chance at spawning or would it be a long process. would the male start the prespawn tube dropping due to the females prespawn state?

Normally males are better looking. But with Discus that has been bred years years for color both males and females are brightly colored. So unless they are pure blood wild specimens I think going by color intensity is out the window. I think the best way to get pairs is to keep several of them together that you like to breed and let them pair off themselfs. Once you establish a pair you may notice the breeding tube become more pronounced.

i had a mated pair of discus that spawned and hatched wrigglers, but it died so i am trying to find a new male for my female. i may just have to get several more and mix them in a 125gal and see where it goes from there.
