Males have little black spots in parrellel rows on the lower half of their body. I have personally seen these spots show up on males less than 2". Also females don't have any type of pattern on the lower half of their jaw. It is normally solid yellow.

Definitly looks like a female to me. By the time they are six inches or so long, male dovies start to develop spots, and turn a really nice blue around the edge of their body, often going to purple in the centre depending on the fishes mood. Males also begin to develop the hump. Females on the other hand show more of the olive and green, with none of the spotting. They also (usually) pair up very readily. I once had a male that was around eighteen inches in length, paired off with a seven inch female, and he never once injured her.

At 9" it should be fairly easy to determine the sex.
The males have lots of very small dots throughout the body,
whereas the females still have the black stripe running down both
sides of their body.

Sexing dovii at a young age is next to impossible, males and females are very similar in appearance and color. As juveniles mature males will start to develop blue spots on their gill plates and the blue begin to show up in their fins. No1 looks like he is a he even the head is starting to round still require a bit of time.

you should be able too.... males with usually be bigger, with a greenish/grey/blue tone to it with lil black dots all over... the females are more vibrant and colorful

Males will have spotting on their bodies and unpaired fins. Females will have no spotting on fins and (maybe) just a little on their bodies. Females will show a dark stripe/bar running from their eye to the base of their tail.

males have much better colors than females unless you get a truly exceptional female

males have black speckles below lateral line aswell as above, females only usually have black speckles above lateral line.

pics are not mine, first pic female, second male.

That pic of the female is nice. Jeff always has some good fishes.
I'll see if I can get some pics of my female tomorrow. She's a sexy little thang.

it is usually quite easy to tell the sex when they are around 4". males are more of a silver colour whereas the females are generally a yellowish colour. also males will have dots running down their body, while a female usually only has them on the lower half of their bodys. see on the top pic(female) she has no black dots running down the top half of her body. also males have spots in their fins, while females have none/.

hope this help.
Male = more colourful...

(btw pics are my mates fish)
