Sexing EBJD

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's not impossible...alot of people say the shape of dorsel and anal fins can be an indicator of sex. Males having longer, pointed, more "elegant "slightly fins. But this is not 100%. Female ebjd's are quite rare( I think )Cichlid so most likely you'll get a male.

gday,

Bktgifridays id agree with you there. ive been told this by a few people as well. regarding the female EBJD's im not sure of, maybe it comes down to pH and higher means majority of one sex and lower means the majority are the opposite? pH effects the ratio of sexes in types like Kribensis i know that, maybe the same?

cheers

Gday again steve,
Well put, never thought of that til now. Many other variables that could also influence a majority sexing. EBJD'$ are my first breeding endeavour, so kind of learning it all at once. Haha

yea, its just interesting to hear some one say about the more males then females.

cheers

Hello everyone, I went to several LFS this weekend in search for a variety of EBJD's. Every shop told me the same thing, both genders exist (obviously), but males are more prevalent. All claimed to be able to identify based on dorsal and anal fins configuration.

Because EBJD display recessive traits, looking at the fin shape, color, etc is not a clear indicator. Plenty of female ebjd closely resemble the male. Your best bet would be to get a dozen or so juveniles and grow them out. Generally, the ones much slower growing are said to be female. I believe temperature plays a role in determining the sex (like with kribensis).

I have bred several pairs of EBJD's in my days....I however believe its easier to throw about 5-10 blue genes in with about 2-4 EBJD's. Let them all pair off, and whether or not the male or female is the EBJD's, all should throw out EBJD's. Now if all you have are Reg JD x EBJD. You will need to grow those frys out and buy a few other EBJD's NOT RELATED to the batch and throw them into your BG pool, again let them pair off and you should get yourself some good EBJD's. If you do however have PIEBALD JDs (expressing reg and electric blue) KEEP THOSE! I have had piebald x EBJD with real high EBJD rate. At about 60%-70% EBJDs. Here is a video of my EBJD pair with their frys...this group was about 60% EBJD http://youtu.be/dSUfLsIqK8k
