I have 6 that are about 3.5-5" and 5 are all about the same size and look identical. The smaller one is darker and subdominant. I know that with standard texas and carpinte, the dark spot in the dorsal is usually the key. The only one that possibly has this is the small one but its whole body is darker and it get beat on so Im not going to say that is definitely a female. Ive known other people who bred these and didnt know which sex was which until they spawned.

I dont want to pull and vent...anyone know any tricks to sexing them otherwise? Spot pattern/size? I may have 5 males and the little one is a girl....thats what I'm leaning toward, but just checking.

Pix of both sexes in non breeding color would be helpful.

Thanks

I just had a bunch of 3 inchers spawn and it brought out the black in their dorsal's, along with 2 females going into breeding dress. Other than the black in the dorsal I can't tell much if a difference in mine, but mine are all still rather small too

These are the Vontehillo variety which is very close with less worming patterns on the head. They are about 4.5" and 7". Male above and female below for comparisons.

My female Escondido had the black dorsal.

Bad photo, but it was there. Not large. Maybe 1" long black blotch.

James, did you end up picking that pair back up?

One of my smaller fish that I thought was a female isn't showing too much black in it's dorsal anymore. I had one male breed with the 2 largest females in my tank in less than a week, and now those two females are showing black in their dorsals. I would of swore I had another pair plus the male and 2 females a few days ago, but I don't really know anymore.

Seems to be a fish that you can easily sex if they're in the right mood
